Day 21 - Potosi to New Glarus WI, 84 miles - Sunday, July 27

I met Max on the Cassville Ferry yesterday, on the way across the Mississippi River after RAGBRAI ended. We rode our bikes 20 miles to the Potosi brewery, had a great dinner, and set up camp at the Great River Army Corps of engineers Campground 2 miles down the road.

This is my last shot of the Mississippi River for a while. These train tracks went right by the campground, and there must have been at least a dozen trains that went by in the night!

The Potosi brewing Company is quite a story. The brewery was literally raised from the ashes in the early 2000's.  It is a nonprofit brewery and was chosen to house the National Brewery Museum, beating out Miluawkee and Saint Louis.

Heading out of Potosi, we stopped at a gas station for a cup of coffee and some supplies.

Max lives in San Francisco, and flew out to ride across Iowa with RAGBRAI. He is now heading to visit friends in Madison, so we decided to ride together today.

Max had a route mapped out that went all on backcountry roads and snuck through a few cities.  Here we are riding through Platteville.

Here's a big M on top of a mound. We did at lot of climbing today, over 3000 feet.

We stopped for lunch at the Red Rooster Café in Mineral Point. Their specialty is a Cornish Pasty, which they have been serving for over 40 years.. It was delicious!

I stopped at the top of a hill heading into Hollandale and took some pictures of a artistic wonder. It is called Nick Englebert's Grandview, and has over 40 concrete sculptures in the yard that he made back in the 1930s.

When we got near New Glarus, Max headed off to Madison and I stopped to look for a motel. New Glaris celebrates its Swiss heritage with an historical village, museums, and it's architecture.

I got a room at the Swiss-Aire Motor and had my first good Wi-Fi and cell phone service for over a week. Yippee! Tomorrow is my last day on the bicycle for awhile, an easy 35 miles on the Badger Bike Trail up to Madison. It's been a fantastic trip!
