Day 1 - Tallahassee to Athens AL, 400 miles - Monday July 7

And we're off ...

It's been a busy weekend, packing up for a big trip like this.  We had to bring both bicycle and motorbike gear on this tour, so the old pickup truck is really overloaded.  It's great to be able to go on the bicycle ride across Iowa (RAGBRAI) again this year with Team Sprint.  What a great gang of kooks !  And when my good friend from Conneticut, Ace, told me he was going to the big Sturgis motorbike rally the first week in August, I figured "why not?"

So I've both my Trek 520 touring bicycle and my 1969 BMW motorcycle all loaded up and ready to go. I was hoping to hit the road around 9 o'clock this morning. Unfortunately, I forgot that I had to back up and update everything on my smartphone. Last summer my cell phone bounced off my bicycle and got run over by a big truck. So I was very happy that I had backed everything up before I left!

It was around 2:00 PM when I finally got everything ready to go, said goodbye to Bev, and hit the road out of Tallahassee. I had a great drive, mostly on interstates, with nice traffic except around Birmingham. There were a lot of crazy drivers around there !

Here's a neat marker at the welcome to Alabama rest stop. I picked up a map and some hotel coupon books there.

It was a beautiful day and my son Tom's 1998 Ford pick up truck drove great.  I ended up driving around 400 miles, getting into Athens Alabama around 8:30 PM. I am staying at the Days Inn and I had a great kids meal for dinner at the Dairy Queen across the street.

Here's the bikes all tucked in and ready for bed. See you tomorrow !
